When I was an evangelical, I too used to have this exact same argument: “The church today has lost its way, but there’s still hope if somehow it can recover a NT ideal model” (whatever that is). No longer — the evangelical support for Trump was the last straw for me, along with the increasing politicization of evangelicalism. That, and my own personal theological/biblical deconstruction proved to be too much in terms of the crushing weight of cognitive dissonance. I no longer believe that there is anything worth saving, if there ever was. I don’t want to be any part of propping up such a system that contributes mightily to religious trauma syndrome, abuses of all sorts, cult-like mind control and indoctrination.
