It’s both, I’d say — in my case, it was not only walking away from the evangelical church (a high social cost), but also now deconstructing my own theological/biblical beliefs. Letting go of creeds and dogmas is, I believe, one of the early steps of deconstruction, when we begin to understand that a) they’re not all-important for us to hold and b) blind adherence to them can be very damaging to our own spiritual and personal development.
